In general, students can be active, talkative, and impulsive. They squirm and fidget and struggle to sit still. Many typical kids have trouble listening, remembering, and following directions. But for students with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), these challenges are amplified. The symptoms are pervasive, chronic, and disruptive, and they cause significant problems for the child at school, at home, and with friends.
Meet David. He's been diagnosed with combined inattentive and hyperactive ADHD.
There's plenty of information out there about ADHD and strategies that parents and teachers can do to help us. But I want to tell you what it's really like living with it. People describe me as charismatic, personable, and popular. But for many others, however, behavior problems result in rejection, isolation, and trouble keeping friends.
Being inattentive means that I have difficulty paying attention and finishing tasks. I'm easily distracted, forgetful, and disorganized, and my teachers keep telling me to listen. Just because I'm staring out the window or doodling doesn't mean that I am not paying attention! I'm actually bored in English class.
I am described as hyperactive and impulsive because I cannot sit still or wait for my turn. I do talk a lot and interrupt. I know I shouldn't be doing these things, but you must know that I cannot always help it. This is how my brain works. Telling me to sit still, and to stop interrupting all day in front of others embarrasses me. I sometimes want to scream because I'm trying too hard to focus in class, but my mind refuses to stay present for more than a moment. For me, it's just a complete, constant lack of focus and motivation.
I want to tell you this: I can become frustrated and overwhelmed very easily. I sometimes have trouble regulating my emotions and struggle with executive function issues. This means that I struggle with:
Planning
Prioritizing
Paying attention
Remembering details
You can only imagine why it is so hard for me to write. How do I get started on my essay? I have a million ideas but I have no idea how to organize them. The concept of "summarizing" is completely overwhelming. And when writing or typing I completely forget what I was going to say because I'm trying to hold information in my head, while trying to organize it, while worrying about spelling and grammar all at the same time. That's a lot of juggling.
"David is a smart student. He just doesn't apply himself" How many times do I hear this? My parents tell me I'm just lazy.
By the end of each day, I am mentally exhausted and then I must do homework. This is usually when I have a meltdown and start fighting with my parents. It's just a never-ending battle.
Two months ago, I learned that I wasn't alone! I was told that there are many kids like me who feel the exact same way. That was a relief. Not only did specialists from ELG work with me directly, but they also came to my school a few times to support my teachers. Dr. D, the counselor helped me with my emotions. ELG's executive function (EF) coachand occupational therapist used movement and other activities to help me focus and concentrate. It takes time and practice, but I am a better student, friend, and son. I'm super proud of myself. Will I continue to struggle? Yes. But I have strategies and coping skills that will take me far in life.
