我的女儿艾拉在学习上可能有一些特殊需求。她目前在学前班,不能很好地跟上同学的步伐,而且她的一些行为令人担忧。她刚满5岁,我想知道她这种有特殊需求的孩子是否可以进入普通学校学习,并得到相关特殊关注。在选择学校的时候,我怎样才能找到能满足她需求的最佳学校入学?老师们能帮忙给些建议吗?

My daughter, Ella has some special needs. She is currently in preschool and doesn't keep up with her classmates as well as she should, and she has some behaviors that are concerning. She just turned 5 years old, and I am wondering if she is ready to succeed in a mainstream school. How do I find the best school that can meet her needs? Can you help?

亲爱的玛吉:

我完全理解您对艾拉现阶段的焦虑和入学的担心。您现在寻求帮助是非常正确的,因为小朋友还很小,早期干预是非常重要的!  很多小朋友在刚进幼儿园时都有不同程度的情绪和行为问题,因为这是他们第一次进入一个集体的环境,他们需要学习适应环境的变化,配合老师的指令,需要遵守学校的规则等等,不再是随心所以得状态。在选择学校时,要考量的一个重要问题是学校是否有专门的学生支持老师/SEN老师,是否可以提供或接受影子老师,班级的学生人数,以及老师是否有足够的经验来引导艾拉,并为她调整教学?

至于您的孩子适不适合进入普通幼儿园的问题,我们需要评估孩子在各个发展模块和同龄孩子之间的差距有多大。比如,她是否能理解和执行简单的指令,能不能安静坐在位子上听课,能不能参与课堂活动,有没有情绪和行为问题等。

在ELG学建,我们提供儿童发展筛查,评估包括沟通、运动和行为/注意力等能力,并解决家长/教师的担忧。如果我们发现孩子的某些表现在边界范围内,也就是说,有一些但不是很严重的问题,我们会通过与家庭和学校合作,给孩子上学提供指导,以确保艾拉能够顺利进入学校学习。有时,只需要通过简单的调整、适应和改变就可以帮助到孩子更好地成长。但是,如果孩子没有通过筛查,我们会告知家长,并需要立即对孩子的情况进行跟进,并建议进行更全面的评估,以更好的帮助孩子。如果是第二种情况,那她可能会出现在学校被孤立,难以参与课堂活动,或有更多的情绪和行为问题。在这种情况下,如果幼儿园没有资源来满足她的需求,她可能不适合在普通的幼儿园就读。因为她在幼儿园里不止没有为小学做好准备,反而给孩子负面的学习体验。

Dear Margie,

I'm sure you are anxious about Ella. You are seeking help at a good time, while she is young. Early intervention is so important!  Many children have different degrees of emotional and behavioral problems when they first enter kindergarten, because this is their first time entering a collective environment, they need to learn to adapt to changes in the environment, cooperate with the teacher's instructions, abide by school rules, etc. When choosing a school an important question to ask is if the school has a dedicated Student Support Teacher/SEN teacher, and whether it can provide or accept shadow teachers. How many students are in the class?  Does the teacher have enough experience to guide Ella and adjust teaching for her?

As for the question of whether your child is suitable for entering a regular kindergarten, we need to assess how big the learning gap is between the child and children of the same age. Does she understand and carry out simple instructions, and participate in classroom activities?  

At ELG we provide developmental screenings and assess communication, motor, and behavior/attention, and address parent/teacher concerns. If we find that your child performs in the borderline range meaning, we have some but not significant concerns we provide guidance by working with you and the school to ensure Ella can access the curriculum. Sometimes simple adjustments, accommodations, and modifications will do the trick. But if the child does not pass the screening and we flag her as needing immediate follow-up and recommend a more comprehensive assessment. She may be socially isolated, have difficulty participating in classroom activities, and have more emotional and behavioral problems. She might not be suitable for a typical kindergarten if the kindergarten does not have the resources to address her needs.

Finally, the question of which form of intervention is best must be analyzed back to the children's abilities and goals. The information you provided mentions that your child does well in regular environments, but in a group environment that's full of change, it can be challenging.

王鸿铨拥有马来西亚国民大学(UKM)职能干预专业的文学学士学位。他还是马来西亚职能干预协会(MOTA)的会员。

在工作中,王鸿铨曾和许多有复杂需求的孩子接触过,其中包括患有自闭症谱系障碍、注意力缺陷多动障碍、广泛性发育迟缓和脑瘫的孩子,因而积累了丰富的干预实践经验。在 UKM 学习期间,他曾在马来西亚多家政府医院的小儿科、老年医学科、神经内科、整形科、精神科和医务科工作过。他还参加了为期一个月的台中荣民总医院的实习工作,以及由四川大学华西医院组织的成都国际交流项目。毕业后,他曾在新加坡陈笃生医院和槟城卢源来专科医院的住院和门诊部工作。

作为学建全日制项目的职能健康专家,王鸿铨负责评估及提供具体的干预方法,并支持项目小组在每个孩子的日常活动中融入干预计划。他运用整体分析的方法,根据每个孩子的不同情况制定干预计划,并督导孩子的干预进展。王鸿铨致力于把孩子们培养成为成熟、独立、充分融入社会的成年人。他愿意发挥自己的力量,照亮孩子未来的发展道路,帮助孩子们尽情享受生活的美好。

Hongsian earned a B.A. in occupational therapy from the National University of Malaysia (UKM), Kuala Lumpur, and is a member of the Malaysian Occupational Therapy Association (MOTA).

Hongsian has extensive hands-on experience in working with children with complex needs, including autism spectrum disorder, ADHD, global developmental delay, and cerebral palsy. During his studies at UKM, Hongsian worked in various government hospitals in Malaysia, gaining experience in pediatric, geriatric, neurology, orthopedic, psychiatric, and medical departments. He also participated in a one-month internship in Taichung Veterans General Hospital in Taiwan and attended an international exchange program in Chengdu, organized by West China Medical College of Sichuan University. After graduation, Hongsian worked at Tan Tock Seng Hospital in Singapore and the Loh Guan Lye Specialists Centre in Penang, in both inpatient and outpatient settings.

As an occupational therapist at ELG's full-time program, Hongsian is responsible for evaluating and providing specific therapies, and supporting the program team to carry over the interventions into each child's daily activities. He uses a holistic approach in planning customized interventions for each child and monitoring their developmental progress. Hongsian is passionate about supporting children to grow into functional, independent adults who are integrated into the community. He strives to be a light that brightens children's futures, supporting them to live life to the fullest.
